Clive Gross Photography:
Marine Court, St Leonards on Sea

Marine Court dominates the seafront at St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex. When it opened in 1937 it was the tallest block of flats in the UK. Marine Court was modelled on the Queen Mary, Cunard's famous liner which first sailed in 1934 though the architects, Kenneth Dalgleish and Roger K Pullen, stopped short of adding portholes. When it opened it contained 153 flats and 3 restaurants. In the 1960s it was home to The Cobweb, also known as the Witch Doctor - a nightclub that saw Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and other luminaries play. Grade II listed in 1999, it is still standing and it’s lived in.
