Clive Gross: Biography, Influences and Exhibitions

I have been taking pictures since being given a Kodak Instamatic 110 by an aunt from the US as a present in the early 70’s, and it has stuck with me ever since.

First and foremost I use photography as a way to orientate myself in any new place or environment and seek out the similarities or differences to where I have been before. It gives me an excuse to look for and at those things we otherwise pass by or fail to notice in our everyday activities. Where I revisit a location, it allows me to look afresh at a different level of detail than before and tease out new or changed atmospheres.

From my humble Instamatic 110 I have progressed on through several film Pentax SLR’s, to digital compacts and now a Fuji digital SLR. I have never been an equipment geek and find I often get the best and most interesting results from the simplest equipment. Much of my more recent work comes from my mobile phone, which sometimes feels like going full circle back to my first camera and truly allows an ‘instant’ response to something that catches my eye.

My photographic influences include John Gay, Kevin Cummins, Weegee, Edwin Smith, Eve Arnold, August Sander and Martin Parr. Among my favourite contemporary artists are Do-Ho Suh, Michael Sowa and Panamarenko, plus going back a little further the political cartoons and paintings of George Grosz. For some books and collections from these artists, please visit my bookshop.
