Clive Gross Photography: Brighton

Since the Royal Pavilion was built for the Prince Regent, Brighton has been the nearest seaside holiday destination for the majority of Londoners. In that that time it has grown into a substantial city with two universities and an internationally famous arts festival, and maintained its reputation as a resort and party destination. Brighton also has one of the highest percentages of rented housing and population turn over which, adding to the seasonality of the tourist sector, makes much about the city temporary and transient. These images attempt to convey some of that atmosphere, featuring shots of events, entertainment venues and railway passengers. Even the Royal Pavilion has a ghostly night time presence.
